IMPALA Club S3 Backup
Challenge
Impala Club, founded from rugby traditions of Prince Wales School (now Nairobi School), has evolved into a leading members club offering diverse social and relaxation facilities in Nairobi, Kenya.
Rapid growth of data led Impala Club to seek a scalable data storage solution. Initial physical storage worked temporarily but proved costly and risky due to frequent hard drive purchases, backup inefficiencies, and vulnerability to data loss
Solution
— Selecting Best Storage Solution
To address cost and security concerns, Impala Club partnered with Computer Revolution Africa Group (CRAG) to migrate local storage to the cloud. Their main requirements were security, durability, scalability, availability, cost-effectiveness, and reliability. Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3) was chosen as best-fit after evaluating multiple AWS options.
— Configuring Selected Storage Solution
The setup began with deploying S3 in the Ireland region for low latency. Access policies were created using JSON, granting admin full control and limited privileges to IAM users. Public access was blocked, server-side encryption enforced, and an automated daily backup script synchronized local and cloud storage. Versioning was enabled to prevent data overwrites.
Results & Business Impact
A lifecycle policy moved data from Standard to Glacier storage after 24 hours, reducing costs and improving data safety. With S3 Glacier’s archiving feature, Impala Club can easily recover lost data, ensuring better protection than on-premises storage.
